Hello ladies,
I just bought this 27' class C motorhome and plan on taking my 9 and 13 year old daughters across Canada from Vancouver, B.C., then south to Disneyworld, New Orlean, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and back home in 9 weeks. I read on this site that you don't recommend boondocking. Why? It's a long trip to be paying for campsites every night. What is unsafe for a woman when there are other motorhomes boondocking on the same parking lot? How can I be as safe as possible? I am brand new at this and welcome all advices from women who have done this kind of travelling. I am planning on getting an alarm installed. Anything else? I appreciate what you have to say and thank you in advance for what you'll be sharing with me.

One of the suggestions that came up at a recent LoW's rally was to take your keys to bed with you, that is if you have an automatic opener with a panic button. If you are overnighting anywhere where there are people nearby and someone tries to get into your camper, hit that panic button. They blowing horn and lights flashing will bring others around.
I think it's all a matter of using common sense. I prefer to use campgrounds, but there are times when it just isn't convenient.

Are you a Passport America member? Check out the banner ad on the homepage here --- read the testimonials on the site or watch the video testimonials on the Passport home page. I feel funny recommending it because my father was the founder (he's passed away now) but that is not 'why' I'm recommending it -- just an idea to help you and the girls stay in a campground more often on your extended trip. Thats why my father founded the company was to help make campgrounds more affordable for folks who do want to camp longer & it benefits the parks by filling up their sites instead of sitting empty. Not trying to sell you anything -- just wanted to help with another idea since you mentioned about your girls. I have a 12 year old (twins) and I know they would much rather stay in a campground for the amenities than to boondock. Just trying to help with some alternatives

I know there are some campgrounds that you can boondock at too sort of instead of asking for a site with hookups / ask for their over flow area or dry camping area and some will let you camp for less with a discounted price than their hook up site rates. Just another idea to try and save on camping-- with your children... you could call them in advance and 'tell' them you are traveling with your children on a 9wk tour and were wanting to stretch your dollar & if they had any overflow or dry camping sites available just so you can get off the road. Most park owners are wonderful people especially the family runned ones.

I find park owners, RVers & Campers to be the most 'caring' -helpful and friendly people and I think you will find that out too on your travels. Hope you and your girls have a wonderful & safe trip. :)

I believe staying at a campground or state park would be the best. Usually you can join like a KOA or Good Sam where you can get discounts. Also, Good Sam has a good deal for joining. In this day and age I don't recommend parking lots. Have a safe trip and take lots of good pictures.

We live outside of Dallas (about 50 miles south east) and your welcome to stay at our place and hook up for a night or two. Otherwise, if you don't feel comfortable doing that there are 100's of places to stay in the DFW/FT Worth area and there are lots of things your kids would enjoy doing. When you get into our area you can e-mail me and I can tell you some good places to stay. shaversd@yahoo.com Happy camping!

Go to Wal-Mart and buy the atlas that has a listing of all the Wal-Mart stores whereever you are traveling. All stores do not object to you staying overnite. The signs you see (no overniters)are for insurance purposes. The parking lots have fun camera security.Don't get yourself in a state of panic or fear, millions of people do this.Be aware of your surroundings, and act normal, bad people detect fear.Lock up at night, don't answer your door after dark,it's pretty hard to get into a motorhome if the doors are locked!Have your cell phone handy, and relax an enjoy yourself.I've traveled from N.J. to Canada,N.J. to Fl. and Fl. to Calif. and now Fl. to Tn.with no problems other than normal things that happen to everyone.Have a trusted co.like AAA for emergencys. Just don't set yourself up for trouble, trust your female instincts and most of all "HAVE FUN" !!!!!
