Please HELP!
We have a/c problems and wonder if anyone can give us some advice.
We bought a Montana 5th wheel second hand about 5 or 6 yrs ago. It is a 36RL with 3 slides.

While on a weekend trip to Galveston SP, the main a/c (duct) started not cooling. The trailer is rigged for 50amps, but can run on 30. Just have to be selectful about what is on at the same time. The area that we were in only had 30-amp service, so we could only run one a/c at a time. Well it got to where it was down right HOT (90's) in the RV. We tried switching over to the B/R a/c, (and it was cool in the B/R) but it couldn't keep up the whole trailer, with the summer heat either. Remember, this is Galveston, so there's no shade. Anyway, we wound up having the unit replaced, (while in the Park) with the next size up, but it has never cooled right since. We had the installer work on it 2 times and then we took it into a shop to have some repair work done and also have a look at the a/c. (they took us to the bank and didn't do a good job) They said it's doing all it can do. I have a hard time believing that everyone’s lg. RV cannot be cooled in the summer heat, by the one-ducted a/c unit. If this were true, no one would use, or for that matter, buy them, especially, in the summer.

Now, with all of that being said, let me say this; we stayed in the direct sun at another park 1 or 2 yrs. later, with 50amp service, ran both a/c units, and it was cooler. Not as cool as we would like, but tolerable.

Please advice:
1) Do you have this same problem when using only one (the duct) a/c unit?
2) In the sun (no shade, one a/c) how cold can you get your rig? I'm talking about a 36 footer, with 3 slides.
2) Who in the Houston, TX (preferably the east side, not Channelview) area has a good a/c service mechanic. If not on the east side, where? It's been worked on 3 times now, and we're still HOT. At this point, I'm willing to drag it just about anywhere (with-in reason) to get it working right and deal with a good honest mechanic.

If you prefer, you can contact me @ gilhickman@hotmail.com

Thanks for any help or info. and Happy RVing.

Hello, I am in Missouri freezing so, just so you know I am not having a lot of symphathy for your heat problem....just kidding, I don't know to much about rv mechanics since we are still in the process of buying our first 5th wheel. But you might try thermo king, they work on refer units for semi trailers, and are usually very reliable and I am sure you would be able to locate a dealer in your area. Good Luck freezing in Missouri Linda

The compressor will not kick in unless it has enough amperage. If it is not getting enough amperage it could burn out the compressor as it trys to start. This happens if the place your staying is not suppling enough amperage to you unit,or if you are drawing the amperage to other appliances. In many multi A/C units one is tryed directly to the generator (usualy the rear A/C unit)so if you start your generator it will run off it,independent of the pluged in power. When the generator is off they all work off the pluged in power. So if you aren't getting enough amperage use the genny. Or sometimes you can draw 50 amps (if it's being delivered to the plug in) by using a Y connector that has two 30 amp plug ins that then goes to a 50 amp where you plug your rig into. You need to have a amp meter or a muti meter to read the out put at the site plug in. Some parks have under powered plug ins that will cause low amperage and voltage that can burn out A/C units.

Hey Highpockets, hope you have that air fixed by now, yep we turned the fireplace on, but would rather be on the beach. Hopefully soon, still working on selling the house right now and have not found the perfect rv yet. Good talking to you.....

First off, I live in central Florida. One unit won't git' it in the summer. my unit is 30 amp (96 Dolphin 36'). It has a device that shuts off things to allow both units to run. I've found that if I put my refrigerator on gas, it seems to do all right. You may have duct work problems. If the unit worked previous to the replacement, I have to believe you are leaking air somewhere. Maybe the end blew out of the ductwork and you are cooling the attic. Or maybe one or more of the supply ducts blew out blasting air into the attic space.

Also, be advised that there is a new substitute refrigerant that runs colder then freon. If all else fails, you might have your system filled with this new gas to overcome your cooling problem.

Read around in here, look for the R-22 varients. One is really supposed to lower evaporator temperatures.
