dog, it's the National average from 10 reporting regions across the country. I know some are low at $3.09 and some are high at $4.059 but the average is $3.47 as of Dec 3, 2007 for diesel. Gas is from $2.799 to $3.399 and averages $3.09. These are weighted averages of thousands of pump prices.

:( Yesterday oil was $88 per barrel, Ten dollars lower that a week ago so why isn't the price coming down. It always goes up fast but does not return. Also it wasn't till about three years ago that gas was always more than diesel, the saying was drive an diesel and save money.

The savings for driving a diesel is $.075 per mile over gasoline powered vehicles even at the higher price. This is because they burn 20 to 30% less fuel per mile. They also polute less than gasoline, as the new ULSD has the same emissions factors as gasoline, when burned in a ULSD designed diesel engine. All new diesel engines are designed to emission standards to use ULSD and polute the same as gasoline engines. But because they get better mileage they use less fuel and therefore polute less. The days of the smoking diesels is over, only clean running diesels are being made. They all get high MPG and soon will be at your local dealers for most brands.:D

I wonder at times if the diesel is higher right now because every thing the military uses runs off of it. If they had a riding mower it would be 24 volt and diesel power. We are using tanker fulls a day in Iraq. Just a thought.

The consumption of fuels is monitored by the refineries. They only produce enough to meet demand with a stock piles for so many days in case refineries go down due to any reason. The new ULSD does cost more to produce as it is processed by expensive equipment mandated by the government. They state it cost about 12 cents more to produce at refineries. Then the delivery charges and profit at the pumps is added plus taxes. The current spread is less than it was even last week. It now is 37 cents more expensive for a while it was 47 cents. I agree it should be about 15 cents and get lower as production and consumption increases. The auto and petroleum industries are waiting to see how the public responds to the new light duty diesel vehicles that will hit the market 2009 to 2011. The estimate is that they will sell 1,800,000 by 2015. That would be 10% of total estimated sales of 18 million units. I think they will be surprised, as the public buys every high mileage diesel they can get there hands on, which will put a demand on the production of the ULSD. The production of gasoline will need to be slowed as it will not be in demand if the diesels take over. Since the oil companies don't want to get cought with excessive inventories they will be watching the consumption and making changes that put them in prudent level of production for profit. The only thing that realy drops prices, at the pumps, is a drop in consumption.:D
