I may not be fast on the response but I choose the 7.3 for reliability. Just did 11 weeks, 10,000 miles through Alaska with a 2002 like yours. The transmission temp got high on some 12+ degree hills but removing the front license plate holder helped as first-aide and I went synthetic transmission fluid on my next service. I also had a Hypertech tuner which got me 8.5 mpg in the mountains and as high as 15 on flatlands going 55 mph/2000 rpm hauling 7 tons of 5th wheel. Hypertech is a very mild tuner and does not effect temperatures
