Canada Cell Phone Service Costs

Two things ... we've been told to be careful with cell phone usage near the US - Canadian border as calls may be picked up by Canadia Cell Towers and would incur much higher costs. Anyone had experiences with this?
Second, we plan on spending several weeks in the Canadian Maritimes next spring. We have Verizon Cell service and VZ Access Internet service ... are we going to get hit with higher costs?

You can add a Canada package to your cell phone. It was $10 when I used one in 04 and I plan to use it again this summer, you can remove it as soon as you come back into the states.
