In the state of New Jersey, youdon't need a special license to operate a class A motorhome. You do need a CDL license to operate any commercial vehicle over 26,000 lbs or a bus carrying 16 or more passengers.

Am not familiar with a Class B NON CDL license. I checked with Florida and this is what they say:
The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles issues the following classes of licenses: Class A, B, C, D, and E.
* Classes A, B, and C are for drivers of commercial motor vehicles such as large trucks and buses.
* Classes D and E are for drivers of non-commercial vehicles.
I have read where Maryland now has a license and drivers tests for RV operators. Maybe States are changing. Florida doesn't require any special licensing..... yet!
Personally I do run with a Class B CDL.

The State of Texas has, for years, non-CDL licenses based upon the weight of the RV. We have Class A Non-CDL licenses which apply to anyone driving a rig over 26,000 lbs or pulling a trailer/toad over 10,000. Our toad is only about 3,000 lbs, but we could pull a heavier one. Since it is the same written and driving test, they went ahead and gave us the Class A in case we change toads.
I am always surprised at how upset people get at the idea of having to demonstrate that they can safely handle a huge machine going down the road. If one can't pass the test, one has no business driving a big RV.

Great point! Although not an issue for me I did arrange to take a drivers confidence course with my DW. The only one that I am aware of is offered through Lazy Days RV near Tampa Florida. I would recommend a program like that one to anyone not feeling comfortable operating their motor home.
Happy Trails :)

I do CDL training in NYS and for any Motorhome over 26,000 lbs , you are required to have an R designation on your license. You can go to any DMV office and get a permit . It will cost you ten dollars and there is no written test and it is good for 1 year. The road test consists of 3 rights 3 lefts and paraell parking the coach.

Utah you dont need a special licensed until you either buy a motorcycle or drive commercially.
