We are planning a two month trip to Alaska in May, and I'm having trouble getting information on taking the ferries. Can anyone tell me how to measure our truck and 5th wheel for total length? Since the cost is determined by total feet, is that with the 5th wheel hooked to the truck or do we measure them separately? The cost is quite high, so it's important. Also, has anybody got any suggestions on where to catch the ferry and where to get off? It seems like there are numerous possibilities. We just want to avoid the lengthy route through the middle of Canada. Our destination is the Kenai Peninsula.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to measure the combined length of your truck & trailer. They will remain hooked together while on the ferry, so that is how they need to be measured. To eliminate any doubts though, contact the ferry service and verify with them.

Friday Harbor or Victoria both out of seattle and you need the length from the front of the truck to the end of the bumper of the 5er. Hooked up together, and the number of passengers. And also plan ahead since the vehicles ferries fill up quickly. Call ahead and make a reservation if need be.

We just made reservations for the Marine Highway from Haines to Prince Rupert and the form I filled out wanted to know how long my motor home was and how long my toad was. It never asked me how long combined. So, in this instance, they only wanted to know the length of each and that is what I gave them. As long as the coach was under 36' and the toad under 19', there was no extra charge.

Hope this helps

If you google alaskan ferries you will get all the info you seek. If you want you can also google washington and canadian ferries as well.

Google the actual name of the Alaska ferry system. It is the "Alaska Marine Highway". Catch it in Bellingham, WA and then get off where it is the best for what you want to do. Ferry is slow because of all the stops, but a great trip.

Have fun!!!

I'll check the Milepost Planner and find a 1 800 number for the ferry service. Thanks for the help. :)
