Hi everyone. We're new to the forum, also. Just signed on and looking for information about travel to Alaska: diesel availability, campground availability, road conditions, etc. Don't plan to go until 2009, but would like to begin gathering info and making plans. Ralph and Donna

Welcome to the forum. Go to Google and do a search. Lot of good info. Alaska will also send you a travel book with a lot of helpful info if you will go to here http://www.alaskatravel.com/ and here is a place to find rv parks in alaska. http://www.rv-clubs.us/alaska_rv_campgrounds.html

We went to Alaska in 2005 and will probably go in 2009 or 2010. We loved it. Get the Milepost and absolute must for Alaska and the Alcan travel. It will tell you mile per mile what is at every location. We went with a brand new rig
40' with four slides and a tow and had no problem. The road was actually better then the 10 in Louisiana or the 5 in Calif. Drive slow and no problems. We only had a headlight bust in our tow, but we took it on the Denali hwy which is all gravel (but beautiful sights...Moose etc).
The Alcan is a two lane hwy for the most part with plenty of turnouts. What we learned so not to have others throw rocks at you is....When someone wants to pass, don't just pull over they will then speed pass you and throw up rocks etc at you. Just slow down and put your blinker on. This will force them to slow down before passing. Worked every time.
Diesel is no problem. We found it easily. There again the Milepost...a lifesaver. it will list campgrounds, gas, sightseeing etc.
One suggestion I have is Take the Alcan up and come back down the Cassier Hwy #37. Make sure you go to Hyder from here to see the Bears. Salmon is running and the bears are feasting.
So much to tell you....If you have specific questions please ask me or send me an email and I will be happy to answer the best I can.
It is a trip of a lifetime and we will do it again real soon. Amazing how so many people head up to Alaska but while we were driving most of the time you have the road to yourself. I can also let you know which campgrounds we prefered if interested. Have fun and welcome....Janet :D

Thanks for your quick reply. We have tentative plans to go to Alaska next summer. Sounds like you had a great experience. My first reaction was "take us with you!!!"
We have a new 36' 5th-wheel and Ford dually truck. We are definitely interested in tapping your reservoir of knowledge about Alaska travel and want to keep in touch.

Another suggestion I have...If you don't already have it, we love the Microsoft trips and streets. You can map out your trip, add campgrounds along the way and customize it anyway you want. You can get it anywhere, Walmart etc. Without the GPS, which is what we have it is alot cheaper. If I remember about 30.00 but the GPS version is at least $100. After you make your itinerary you can print it. I use to be a travel agent before we retired so I'm really compulsive with things like this. Anway...have fun anad email me with any questions.
