Family is taking a first time road trip in a class c in June from Texas to Virginia. I have our route mapped out and am checking out campgrounds. I'm wondering if I should make CG reservations. I don't really want to set in stone that we'll be at a certain place at a certain time, but I don't want to get there and not have a place to stay. Any suggestions?

You could make reservations for the time you think you may be there and most will not penalize you if you give them time to fill the spot. Be careful though and read reservation rules some will not refund deposits. Also when making reservations ask if it will be a problem and explain your situation that you may not be sure avbout arrival and departure dates.

Friday & Saturdays will be your main problem finding a campground that isn't booked esp. after school lets out for the summer. You may want to plan things so that you have a reservation on those days. The rest of the time I think you would be ok.
As "jimbo" has already mentioned you could contact the parks that you are interested in and find out how full there booking is looking and make reservations.

My 2 cents, as most here, I've traveled up and down the East Coast and to the Mid-West and never with a reservation because I normally don't know where I'll end up. There are to many rest areas, truck stops, Wal-Marts, Cracker Barrels or Home Depots to worry about a place to park for the night. I'm not one to go 10, 20 or 30 miles off the trail to find a campground. If your going to stay for a few days, then you would want to find a campground. Most or if not all major highways have signs at an exit telling you what is in the area and most CG's will have an overflow area.
