We are planing a trip West some on the Old Route 66. We will be driving a 25' B Touring Crus. To get around to different sites ( Grand Canyon etc.) would it be best to tow a car, jeep, etc.?

I have a 32 ft Class C and tow a Jeep Wrangler. At 2600 lbs it pulls very easy. I don't notice any difference in gas milage. Don't need an aux break system. With manual trans and transfer case in nutral no miles are recorded on the Jeep while towing. With the soft top down its a lot of fun getting around.

If you have a Class B van, you should have no trouble visiting most sites with it. Towing a vehicle will probably cost you more in gas mileage than you will save by using it. Also you won't be able to back up if you get into a bad spot unless you unhook.

25 feet isn't too huge to get around, especially the feel of a Class B. But for me the question is making and breaking camp when you want to go sightseeing or out to eat or hitting a WalMart. The mileage difference is no big thing; it's the convenience of having a smaller vehicle to get around in without the inconvenience of making/breaking camp. If you don't want to tow, Enterprise Car Rentals is a pretty good answer. They'll deliver a rental to your site. We used them once in Pagosa Springs, Co. and it worked out great. But we almost always tow. I'd suggest maybe making a weeklong trip or something without towing and see how it works out.

As with most things it is personal preference. We had a Sprinter class B, loved where we could take it, but very uncomfortable (for us). We upgraded to an Itasca Cambria 27ft. thought we could travel without a toad. We used the rental if we stayed longer than a couple of days. However we found that when we stop overnight in our travels (around 2 or 3pm, we don’t travel from dawn to dusk anymore) we like to go out to dinner, or shop in antique stores. Being somewhat lazy I didn’t want to disconnect everything at the campsite to go, so we didn’t go. We bought a used Saturn station wagon to tow four down. We love the ability to sightsee while leaving the motorhome connected. We don’t see a significant mileage decrease. The one response is right, if you get into a tight spot you may have to disconnect. It happened to me at a Flying J. Took me about three minutes to disconnect and drive both to the RV spots and about five minutes to reconnect. It works for us and having done both we much prefer having a toad.

We have a 29' Motorhome and tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee everywhere we go. It is 4 wheel drive with auto trans.. With a Roadmaster tow bar, hook up and disc. is simple. Again we do not leave home without our tow car.
