We recently returned from 7 weeks on the road, traveling from Florida through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. Our interests included rock hounding and gold hunting. We got a guidebook that described places where we could find different types of rocks and gold hunting. We were able to access (with permission) a couple of claims. The problem is we have no idea what we are looking at when we are on the hunt.

So, with that said am wondering who else has this interest and maybe we can share notes on the subject.

Experience is something you get 10 minutes after you needed it! :)

You need to check out GPAA if haven't already. GPAA web site http://www.goldprospectors.org/ They are a very large gold/rock prospecting org. They even have a listing of when you can catch there shows on TV each month.

if you are heading back to Arizona this coming winter,(as we are) Quartzsite might be for you. We belong to a metal detecting club there. It is very active from Nov. to March. www.quartzsitemetaldetectingclub.com and also a spin off group from the Blythe chapter of the GPAA www.nuggettwranglers.com. The metal detecting club has a few claims to hunt for gold which are available to members. Cost is 15.00 or 25.00 for family. We hold outings and really have a great time. Coin hunt in Q town park once a month..great prizes and you keep the coins you find..The club probably has about 500 nationwide members..check out the sites and see for yourself..

Its located a few miles south of Deming NM. They encourage you to take 35# of rocks from the park. I also talked to a man at the desk and he gave me a map to get to an old fort and told me where there was an old mine where nice rocks could be picked off the waste dump. He also provided a map showing where was a good place to dig for geodes.

We had camped not far from the State Park near Deming NM. It's an interesting place. Next visit out that way I will spend more time in that area. One day was not enough time.

Thanks for the post gmandjj1980!

We purchased a White brand metal detector while on our excursion in Az. We are still learning to use this technology and curious what brand/type of metal detectors folks use.

Thanks
