We do most of our touring up in the mountains, the Rockies. We love camping on lakes, rivers, etc. I've often thought I'd love to do some canoeing or kayaking or something just to get out on the water, but don't want to have to stow something. I've seen the Portaboats that collapse down to surfboard size, as well as inflatables. Just seems like a hassle. Does anyone have any ideas or experience, such as maybe renting these type of things when you get to your destination? Any ideas?

Finding boat rentals in the Rockies is often times an uphill battle. The two places I know have canoe rentals in Colorado are the marina at Lake Estes (Estes Park) and Grand Lake. Toating an inflatable in the RV can be convienent, however they need to be kept out of reach of sharp objects. Heck, I know alot of people who have canoes sitting in their back yards. If your passing through Denver, give me a call and I will find one for you to use.

I don't know about the collapsibles but I have heard the inflatables don't steer well. We have 2 Eddyline kayaks we carry on the top of the Susuki and tow behind our motorhome. No problems.

I love going on the water too, but my wife doesn't. We have a motorhome and tow a car, so a john boat was out of the question so I bought a kayak, and hall it on the roof of the grand am with two mountain bikes. Thule or Yakima makes awesome racks, and is as easy as 1....2....3!!!!!

I teach kayaking in the summer so i have to travel with all my stuff. Check out my site and you will see pictures. The secret is to have 2" receivers in as many places as you can to receive different racks.

I love the water also, and see it mostly from below. Salt and freshwater beach dives are the way I do it when I'm not towing the boat. :D
Enjoy, Larry
