As I'm really new to the travel trailer route (been tent & pop-up till now) I'm missing the connection between the slide lube and rubber roofs in the other thread. That said, the info on Tide and 303 is very helpful. But...

My question is regarding the products sold at, for example, Camping World that are roof coatings. Specifically, Kool Seal Rubber Roof Top Coat & Primer.

Are these valid products? Are they applied over existing rubber roofs? Are there any problems if they are used, etc?

Hope some folks can provide insight. I've seen products that are advertised that are not necessarily "right" for various rigs. So any help would be really appreciated.

thanks

I would be careful what I put on a rubber roof. I believe most of the products you have listed are for older roofs that are showing their age. As for maintenace I would look in ownwers manual to see reccomended cleaners I have had good lucki with spic&span and a soft brush. Usually the only maintenace required is washing and recaulking seams and openings. If you have a newer camper using some of these things may void your warrenty. My owners manual has a list of reccomended cleaning solvents and tells how many times a year to inspect the roof. Look for cracks in caulk and bubbles in the roof as these are signs of a possible leak. Some people swear by eterna bond tape to seal openings and seams. I haven't tried it but it sounds like a good product. Also never use any petroleum based cleaners or solvents on your rubber roof.

I agree with Jimbo, you should never have to put anything on your rubber roof and most manufacterers will tell you not to, just to clean it and seal with an approved compound. My roof is by Dicor and I use the Dicor self leveling caulk to touch up any seams. Your warranty information shoud tell you who makes your roof and you can contact them for proper care.

Great input - Thanks. The trailer is older though, '99, and the roof looks to be ok, but does show its age. Thus the questions about coatings.

I'll check the manual and see if there is any more detail that I missed previously. Most of the content is "clean once a year and repair as necessary".

I don't believe in them, I don't ever see them coating other buildings with rubber roofs!

I had a Southwind that I kept for 10 years, and the only thing I did to the roof was wash it! Many of the coating products have stuff in them that will do more harm than good! My Alumascape has RV2000, which is similar to Brit-Tek, which does not streak and requires nothing more than washing.
