Are you saving it in a format they can't open?
Most people don't use Microsoft Works (that I know of), so it may just be that.

It just all depends on the package that comes with the computer. Some manufacturers include Works on theirs, others Office, and some include either one depending on the amount of money/software bundle you purchase. When shopping for a computer, those are other things you may want to look at: You don't want to purchase software bundles you won't use and aren't part of what you're use to using. But, if it's "free" and pre-installed on the computer, then you really can't do much aside from asking them if they'd uninstall it.
Often, computers come installed with both Office and Works, with Office as a trial version, and Works free.
You can always download OpenOffice, and learn (or set it) to save in the Microsoft Word format so your friends can view it. OpenOffice is a free office suite that works just as well as the regular Office (sans Outlook).

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This is a universal "reader" that most people have installed on there systems. Download this, install and when you go to save a Works document, save it as an adobe file. That way the sender just double clicks on the attachment and it will open up in Adobe Reader. Its free to.
