The Rio Grande Valley is a great place to winter. South texas has pleasant weather during the winter months and depending on how far south you are temps in the 70s during Jan and Feb are not unusual. The wind is the real issue. Count on windy days just about all the time. If you're around Mission or McAllen it's not as bad, but Harlingen and those areas closer to the coast will be windy. You will be treated as a "Winter Texan" and not like a snow bird. Texas welcomes it's winter travelers and you don't have to put up with the congestions and high prices in places like Southern California and Florida. Try it, you'll really like it.

As with most good places it is becoming really crowded and the people are generally ok but more and more there are those that are difficult to get along with but the locals and those that have been wintering in the valley for a while are laid back and easy going. But it is beginning to get like Fla.

We have enjoyed Penitas, Tx, for 2 winters, and plan to visit this winter, again. At the "Fountain at Penitas RV Park", we met many friendly Canadians, and Northern U.S. state visitors. The fresh Oranges, and Grapefruit, alone are worth the trip. A Newspaper "Winter Texan", gives all the information about what is going on in the area, and is very helpful. There are MANY RV Parks in the whole area, from Penitas East to South Padre Island. It is close to Progresso, where one can take a trip to Mexico, walk across the bridge for a few hrs. or day of adventure. Many that we know, even had Dental work, and bought Prescriptions at very reasonable prices. We wish we could spend more time there, as there are MANY things to do. Please visit, you will enjoy. The weather is varied, but mainly warm ! Jo Parker

Texas. I love it. We winter in Alamo, Texas. There is a string of towns across highway 83. It starts around McAllen all the way to Harligen and then some. We love the palm trees, the people, and the tropical weather. In Texas you are not a snow bird, but a winter Texan. Since we are full time, we could be anywhere, but Florida is a bit pricey, Arizona gets cold weather. The Rio Grande Valley runs about 1-5 miles north of the Rio Grande River, south is Mexico. We stay at a Wilder Park.
