As the title states, Im studying for my Tech ticket using both printed and online materials.
I would like input as to how this would work as a first radio.

Iv thought about asking on a couple of Ham sites, but I think they require a call sign to join.
Thanks for the help.

Hi again Donnie
HTs are great and very vesritle but also limited in power and the rubber duckie antenna should be called a rubber duckie dummy load. They are very inefficant and so your range is very limited. With some you can take the duckie off and attach the coax from a good antenna but then you lose the most importand part of a HT "portability"

Thanks for the reply Dave.
I passed the Tech but didnt do so well on the General.
What Im considering is a Kenwood tribander with a external magmount antenna for when Im mobile.
Havent really considered anything as a base yet.

Hi Donnie KI6UQI
Congratulations!!! ;) Welcone to the fraternity of lisenced Hams.
Be sure you have a BIG magnet on that antenna. If you put it up high (you should) on a trailer or motor home, remember that it is in harms way up there! Tell me more about your rig and plans.

Dave,
Right now Im looking at a Kenwood TH F6A. Just to get myself on the air.
I plan on getting a external antenna to use on the truck and another mount on the motorhome.
Iv talked to one guy that has the same setup as Im thinking about and he has the radio hooked up to an amp and a mag mount and claims he does great with it.
Iv done some checking and most of the areas I travel have repeaters on either 2 meter or 440 so I should be ok.
I think thats where Ill be mostly to start out is 2 M or 440.
Dont know yet.
