Not ever being there in the winter , I would expect a lot of the roads to be closed as well as a lot of places to be snow bound.
They usually don't open the roads till spring, along with the "long handles" you might take skies and snow shoes for your transportation.
Enjoy your trip.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

I would suggest going to the National Park Service's website on Yellowstone, www.nps.gov/yell and check out the section entitled "Operating Hours and Seasons." They have a lot of good information about what is open, what is closed, current road conditions and closures, etc.
Here's just one blurb from the above website:
"The only park road that remains open to wheeled-vehicle use year-round is the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance at Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana. Snow tires and/or chains may be required. The road is open 24 hours per day (winter storms may close the road temporarily)."
From the above website, it appears that Mammoth Campground is the only one open during the winter season...all other NPS-run campgrounds and concession-run campgrounds are closed.
