i would like to know what kind of mileage different people get. I have a F150 and pull a 25 foot Terry Lite. Mileage not very good. 8 to 10 MPG. Is this normal? Will a diesel do better even with the higher cost per gallon.

I pull a 37' MONTANA 5th wheel with 05 Dodge 3500 DRW Cumming's diesel. I hand calculate all my mileage. Don't trust the overhead mileage.
I run 68-70 with AC on Montana tips scale's at around 13,000. My Last trip down to Rio Grande Valley = Mercedes Texas from Kansas I averaged 11.8 coming back I averaged 12.2.
My friends both have a Chev and Ford pulling about the same load and I get about 1 to 1.5 better.
However, Their trucks are PRETTY ""ER"" and they have 8 cyl and I am stuck with that little old 6 cyl...
At least if the fuel goes out of sight ""with diesel you can make your own"" Gas you can't

Good luck and Great Hunting Later John

I have a 06 Ford F 250 turbo diesel and pull a 32 ft fifth wheel. It is mid profile and I would guess I am pulling around 10000 lbs. Only getting between 10 and 11 pulling the trailer. Sure hope it improves. I usually run in the 70 mph range on the interstates. I havent checked it on the road without a load.

I had a 2003 Chevy 1500HD pulling a 23ft TT and got a solid 7.5mpg. Moved up to a 2006 2500HD Diesel with the Allison and got 13mpg. Now I am pulling a 33ft toybox at 14,400lbs and getting around 11mpg. Still waiting for the engine to get broken in.

I did some reading before buying my 2006 F 250 TD and saw at least a couple times diesels may not be fully broken in until you get 20,000 on them. At the rate I am going, that will be about two or three years because I dont drive it around town much. I was wondering if anyone with the 6.0 ford turbo diesels had experienced a fuel mileage increase with increased miles on the vehicle. I am hoping. But, I didnt expect to get corolla mileage out of it either. Just wondering.

I have a 2001 F250 7.3 Power Stroke and I pull a 28 foot travel trailer. I live in New Mexico and it is mostly all up and down hills. I am getting 16 mpg on the average. I know it would do much better in a lot of other states. I have also heard that the new Power Stroke with the 6.4 is unreal. I have a friend that sells them and he told me he has never seen anything with that kind of power.

I pull a 36 foot Alfa 5th wheel with a Dodge 3500 diesel with a 6 speed manual transmission. The 5th wheel weighs about 16000 lbs and I get between 10 to 12 miles per gallon on the freeway going about 60 to 65 mph. I have gotten as high as 18 mpg and as low as 9 mpg depending upon the landscape, hills or ?

It figures Ford would come out with a better deal than the 6.0 when I have one now. Probably make the trade worth less but what the heck. I have heard from two relatives about how great the Ford 7.3 was and is. I think Ford will grab a pretty good bit of the business with the F 450 they have coming too. I will have my 6.0 for a long time so it will do better one way or the other. I am still not regretting getting a diesel for sure. THey are strong and the Ford was a good choice with the trailer braking as a standard option. Always eaiser to look at what the other guy has when you have recently bought something new and wish you had done something differently.

I have a 40' Titanium w/3 slides (true lightwieght) weighs in at 12,400 dry and 14,500 wet, I tow it with a 01 chev. dually ext. cab. Duramax diesel ,Titanium has the aerodynamic nose over the truck, and it works!!!...I have opened up the exhaust to let it breath, and added a k&N filter charger intake to help it breath also If I hold 62mph on cruise than I can get as high as 13mpg towing.. the truck alone wieghs 8400 lbs with the extra fuel tank full. Also while not towing at 62 mph I get just over 20 mpg
I have found over my 25 years of towing that almost any vehicle will lose about 1/3 of its mpg when towing...it seems to hold true. my gas 457 eng used to get 12 solo and about 8 towing at 60 and 5 at 70

I have a 1999 gmc suburban1500 towing a jayco 31bhs and get around 7 mpg. It has the 350 engine with 3.73 rear end. Am looking to upgrade tow vehicle but just can't find one I like. the 2007 chevys and gmcs don't have the deisel option that I would like so i may just wait and see if that changes next year because I would really like a 3/4 ton burb with a deisel.

I'd say what towing mpgs you are getting is 'normal'.. I have a f150 with 5.4 and 3.55 gears and tow a 22' TT and get about 10 mpg on average...

I don't really pay much attention to it and with the price of gas what it is, a couple mpgs either way is not going to make that much of a difference dollar wise.... I'm going to tow my rig no matter what the darn prices are!!

If your F150 is paid for, then the cost of getting a 'diesel' over the price of what your F150 cost will buy a heck of a lot of gas!

As long as you are satisfied with the towing performance of the F150, it makes no 'economic' sense to get a diesel for the sake of mpgs, unless that's the kind of truck you really, really want to get anyway.... Big difference between 'want' and 'need'... ;)

I drive a F150-2005 Ford pickup and pull a 30ft Fleetwood. Gross wt 6000lbs . The truck has a 4.6 v8, with the 4 speed auto transmission. I have been averaging 13.3 mile per gallon. Keep in mind, the bed of the truck normally has two rolls of fire wood stacked to the top of the cover. Also two bikes, a cooler (loaded). I'm not complaining on gas mileage.

We just completed 11000 miles on the road pulling a Denali fifth wheel (35 ft)
Vehicle used was an '04 Chevy Duramax/Allison combination 3500 Silverado CC.
Our average for the trip was 12.4 mpg. The loop that we made was Iowa south to Oklahoma, west to California, back to Las Vegas Nevada then up to Idaho, then east back to Iowa. By the time we pulled back into our driveway it was almost 11000 miles.
I prefer the Diesel not only for the extra mpg but for the lower RPM for peak power.

I pull a 33' jayco 5er, with a 2002 f-250. If I average it out I get about 101/2 towing. About 17 solo. I have gotten as high as 15 towing with a strong tail wind. I love the power this engine has, especally since I chipped it. I've heard the 08 6.4 is supposed to really be good

We have a 25 ft Airstream and pull it with a '05 GMC Crew Cab Duramax/Allison 5 spd.. We get about 14.5 to 15.6 at 60 - 64 mph (arpund 1800 rpm) pulling it and 21 - 25 empty. The only thing I've changed from original equipment is the tires. Went up to LT 265/75R/16 from LT245/75R/16 (one size) This increased the roll out 14% which is the same as changing the gear ratio

We use ford E-250 van pull 30 Holiday rambler I get 9.9 per gallon. Hold on to your hats I was just on a site and the petrolium companys are saying $4+ this summer Why we didnt nip this in the Bud when they started raising prices in the first place and the stupid excuses for raising prices. I firmly believe this country has the technoligy to build cars/trucks that dont pollute and can run on cheap fuels that wont destroy our planet afterall at one time gas was considerd a waste product..

For what its worth, I pulled my 26' coachman 5th wheel with a F150 FX4 with the 5.2L v8. omg what a wimp, totally underpowered. Gas mileage was nearly 5 [five]. So I traded it in on a Ford F350 7.3L diesel. Unbelievable! I get 20-21 without the 5th wheel and around 14 pulling the 5th wheel. A powerful brute. unfortunantly the tranny (auto) gave up at 52k miles. The camper only weighs 7,000 lb. What a disappointment. FOrd wont fix it either, not even under warranty or with the extended warranty. SO now i Have a $40k tinker toy and not enough funds to buy a rebuilt 3500$ replacement. Stay away from Fords.

I just returned from a 6 week trip towing a 2000 Mallard 265H 5th wheel. Truck is a 05 Silverado with 5.3 gasser with 4:10 gears. I averaged 12.4 MPG according to my onboard computer. The secret ...Keep it under 2000 RPM and only use "tow/haul" if the transmission keeps shifting back and forth.

I look at all aspects of it . I am full time Rver. My 5th Wheel is 96 Alpenlite Appeltree rear living room with two slide outs. So being full timer the trailer is packed. I was pulling it with 98 Dodge Quad cab 1 ton duely Diesel auto trans. I pull across scales before we went full time in vacation mode and grossed out truck and trailer at 20,320 lbs It was working to hard pulling the mountains of Az. & Co. always running to hot. I sold it in 2004 it had 110,000 miles on it and was all doll up for $18,500. I bought a 1999 Volvo 610 truck Converted to Rv. Fuel mileage is 9.3 to 9.4 pulling the trailer over all grades and for safety with a 3 speed Jake on engine which is a N14 Cummins with Eton 10 speed trans. I opted to leave it tandem drive. Because 9 out 10 times National Forest and State Parks you are dirt or grass should it rain and you want to get out you put it in power divider and both drivers pull you out. Also I have 300 gal fueltanks. I could get better fuel milage if I single up the axels. If anyone is interested in one email onezman@hotmail.com Larry is his name. I can tell when you are pulling your 5th wheel with the Volvo your pulling it safely and are rideing on air seats. And you also have a sleeper for your co driver to take a nap .

ok gang i'll throw in my nickles worth-i drive a 2005 dodge hemi 4x2 -it is the late model and the first with mds. my mileage fluctuates from 9.1 mpg heavy hauling up the monida pass (8000) ft to 13.1 on the flats to 13.5 on my best day with a tailwind. i pull a 278 rlss pilgrim tt at 8000 lbs-truck is rated at 9600-i think the mileage question here is not what you drive but how -i cruise at a constant 60 mph therefore my mileage is as good as any diesel if not better!

I have a 2007 Ford F250 4X4 6.0 diesel (King Ranch). I got around 18+ on the highway when I purchased it. Since then I have installed the 4" Silverline stainless exhaust, a green enterprise air cleaner, and a Bully Dog programmer. Now I get 20+ on the highway, but around 16 in town. However, the amount of power increase is incredible and keeping my "foot in it" probably adversly affects my mileage. We have the fully loaded Ford 7.3 dually,5spd, gear vendor trans, top of the line banks equipment etc. etc... love it and won't trade it, but the issue wasn't ability to pull our Alfa 38' 5ver, even grossing at 18,500 as full timers.. it was the issue of emergency stopping and comfort. We opted to buy a class 7 IHC Eagle, with a 350 Cummings, 10spd, 300 gallong fuel tanks, and outfitted the already single axle tractor with the appropriate air ride hitch, flat bed for our motorcycle and what we have is a very comfotable, unit that allows the wife to sleep, work out, walk around and feel totally safe in while we travel the country. We get around 9mpg with this empty or loaded. We use it for our town vehicle too, unless we choose to rent a car for inclement weather trips, otherwise we jump on the Suzuki and go sight seeing. Any questions, you can email me at ibtallwalt@yahoo.com.

Hello, I have a F350 with the 6.0. I only have 31,000 on it now. Had it 3 yrs 3/17/08. I pull a Holiday Rambler 37Ft. My first trip out in May 06 after retiring it weight in around 16000. I got about 8 MPG. Traveled out west in some step mountains. It was new then. I have noticed the mileage creeping up a little. I haven't pulled the camper on a long trip since I have gotten more miles on it. The empty mileage seemed to increase up to around 18MPG around the 30,000 mark. I have been told it won't get it's best mileage till it reaches it's 50 to 60,000 point. Hope it improves Diesel is around $4.05 here in central Fl.

I just recently recieved an email from someone who worked for a gas supply company and he stated how important it was to fill up in the morning when it is colder, that you actually get more gas for your money, something about the heat expanding it. (sorry can't fine the article) :( He also said to never fill up when the station is having their gas pumped in as it moves sediment around from the bottom of the tanks. The other thing he said was to pump slowly (never fast) and to not let your tank get below half. :)
