I and my other half are both retired Air Force. Have been talking to other retirees on a couple of other rv sites. Questions came up about the fact that there are some bases in the US using a scanning of ID cards when coming onto base, a couple are Peterson AFB and Charleston AFB. I did more research and contacted AF Manpower & Personnel Center Retiree's Office.
Received a message (I would be happy to forward copy) which says that as long as you have an ID card with a bar code on it you should be allowed on base. Because 100% ID checking is being done many bases have stopped using registration stickers for autos. Bases that seem to still require stickers (don't know branch of service) are making visitors register vehicles.
Unfortunately we have to do what the bases require so if there is a base using the scanners we will have to go to the visitors center to get into their system. Guess once you are in it and come back won't have to worry.
For us retirees we have to accept the progress and flow with it. If anyone knows the other branches' of service retiree assistance I would be happy to contact them to ask the question. Please contact me at jbrit@clearwire.net if anyone wants the AFMPC message so they can carry it with them.

The navy at corpus christi Texas would not honor a defense sticker from Randolph AFB I had to get a visitors pass as the line was to long for a base decal. Yet they are also doing 100% ID check so go figure. They will not accept air force decalss. I am also retired AF been that way for 38 years

I sign on to the forums on US military campgrounds and it is interesting the different things that happen to other military campers. Apparently Army bases still use stickers so have to go to visitor centers. The first post I saw on the subject was from a guy who found out about the scanners at Peterson, checking web sites show some are using it and some are not. They honor the ID cards some make it harder than others. Just have to go with the flow. I am near Dyess AFB in TX, they have the civilian gate guards who only work 5 day weeks and what it left of the security police handle the gates. They are all doing the best they can and handle the changes as they come along. I would like to see them use the DEERS data base, to update their 'registered" people and it would make it lots easier. That probably makes too much sense.

fairchild afb did a full inspection with every door and compartment open on mh and toad. after that experience i will not go on a military base again with my motorhome. there are too many good parks that are easier to enter so i will leave the famcamps for you.

Maybe that was unusual.

Even when I was in the military always though the car stickers were ridiculous. If someone wants to get on they will.
