Anyone do any "Walmart camping?" Any BAD experiences?

Most don't want ya there anymore due to some campers that think its ok to set up and stay for a few days. Plus them dumping there tanks in storm drains

Have never "camped" at a Wal-Mart, but we do frequently overnight at Flying J's with no problems.

We were at a super center two nights ago. Got there about 4:30, did our shopping ($136), packed groceries away, ate dinner and relaxed. Left the next morning about 9:00. No problems. It was windy and I did worry about loose shopping carts possibly hitting the MH, but that didn't happen. This was our third time in about the past year and we haven't had any problems. You should call ahead and ask management, some Wal-marts don't allow it. Either a town ordinance or if they share the parking lot with other stores.

Where are you getting your information from? I have never heard that. We stop there all of the time and have never had a problem or been refused to stay there. I don't think anyone would dump tanks in the storm drains. If it happened it is probably a rare thing.

It is always best to call ahead and make sure it is ok to stay in the parking lot of any particular Wal-mart.
The RV Bookstore has a book that list all the Wal-Marts that do not allow you to stay in there parking lots. There are a lot of towns that have enacted laws to prevent you from staying in parking lots etc.

We have never spent the night at a Walmart either but see many RV in lots all over the U.S. so many people must. I hope no one is abusing the favor Walmart is doing for all of us. I personally do not know what we did before the Walmarts came along. Yes Flying J's are usually our choice because they are in locations on the interstates and we use them for fueling anyway. Not the most peaceful place but the key words are "Free and Safe". You also have the added bonus of a place to eat and clean bathrooms in most cases. Park with the big rigs in the back if you don't mind the noise. Many more spaces back there. Get there early if you want a parking space up front in the RV area. Happy Trails, Katzmam

We have stayed at one last year. It was an interesting experience. I was looking out the window all night long....seeing how many people come in at 2 3 or 4:00 in the morning! Then I watched the parking lot cleaner crew. I was entertained. My husband was not. LOL.
As far as Walmarts allowing you to stay overnight--there is actually an Atlas of these Walmarts that we purchased at Walmart--listing the ones participating. Haven't come across any that don't. I suppose that has good monetary results. They will get our money....cause we will stock up there!
Also, I have heard that Cracker Barrels allow this also. I wouldn't want to stay there since it is not open 24 hrs and would be deserted...safety issues.
What about staying over night in a rest area? Do that?

On my trip from San Diego to Washington, we stopped the first night at a rest stop. I didn't sleep a wink because of all the truck noise AND someone stole some stuff out of the bed of the truck. The next night we pulled into a Wal-Mart Super Center that was open 24 hours. I slept well knowing that there were employees all around as well as video cameras. Two other rigs pulled in sometime during the night, and no problems. I just feel safer at Wal-Mart.

There are many Wal-marts that do not allow overnight stays in there parking lots, mainly due to City Ord. The RV bookstore for 1 has a book that list all the Wal-marts that do not allow you to stay.
It is always wise to call ahead an find out if you can stay or not.

My wife and I made a trip around these United States last summer covering 24 states. We stayed at many Super W.M. stores, the only time we were refused was if there was a law against it.
I do recommend that you check with the customer service desk and get permission. They will tell you where to park your rig so as not to interfere with the other customer parking. This also lets the security patrols know you are there.

Have spent many nights in rest areas on the way to or from. Many have limits on the number of hours you can stay.
One time I accidently blocked the exit for a semi, instead of knocking he just honked until I woke up and moved.

We have stayed at Wal-Mart many times. Never really had a problem from Wal-Mart. We did get a warning to move from the city police((?) in Goodyear AZ, and we were just shopping. We try to be good guests and keep the slides in and jacks up, that kind of thing. And we do our shopping there.
Mostly we look for signage saying "we are not welcome" and use common sense. I know you can't park in the Wal-Mart next to Disney World (if you take my meaning). Or in parking lots that are crowded and don't have plenty of room.
The one thing I don't do is ask. I know there are differing points of view on this, but I have always gone by the maxim, "if you don't want to know the answer, don't ask the question".

We have stayed at several Wal-marts. Usually you aren't allowed to stay at any stores near resorts. (St. Petersburg,Fl., Destin, Panama City, Ft. Meyers,Fl. etc. but many others welcome travelers. Southern Florida counties have an ordinance that forbids any camping at Wal-marts and no more than 3 hours stay in the rest areas down there.

WalMart is a wonderful place for an RVer to overnight after completing your shopping and checking with management to verify there is not a city ordinance against it. IT IS NOT a camping place. Therefore, you should never put your slides out (takes too much room), put your jacks down (will ruin asphalt) and never set up your grill or chairs. These things will ruin this great opportunity for all of us. Be thankful they allow us to spend 1 night.

We travelled across Canada, literally depending on sales at markets to pay the way so we depended on Wal-Marts and other malls for cheap parking. We always err on the side of caution and respect. If there is a sign at the entrance to a mall saying no overnight parking, then we went elsewhere.
We'd recommend parking well away from the main area of the lot, not leaving a mess nor abusing the privilege by over-staying your welcome. We found their people a mother lode of information and helpfulness.
The odd time we could afford a campground was a real treat. Wal-Marts in most places welcome RV'ers as good business sense, but up here in Canada, there are places where campground owners have pressured cities into making it illegal to do so.
We wrote a book about travelling on what we call a dime and a dream, and thanks to malls like Wal-Mart, it will be possible to travel Canada again this summer.

Just in case you haven't found it yet, I wanted to let you all know that we have a new section of myRVspace that covers a similar topic. You can go to the Home page and click on State Info in the blue bar on the left. This section provides information about each state. Most pages even include cities where you cannot park at Wal-Mart. We have stayed in Walmart's parking lot, coming and going to and from Florida/and or Texas. Only becuase there were no campgrounds open. Never had a problem. You can go into the Walmart website, it lists the walmarts that won't allow you to stay(very few).
I do believe that if a campground is open it is better to stay there (they need our money to stay open). As a Canadian snow bird, the Flying J's do fill up early, I perfer to stroll a Walmart, than the Flying J store (not much there). Also, the food at Flying J is not very good. Often there is a better selection near a Walmart.

We use walmarts when we are high balling. Get in late and leave early. We always seem to buy something at the store. We have never felt insecure at a walmart along the west coast area. Florida will not allow you to stay in a walmart. We have often found wifi connections in the parking lots as well.

We've used Wal-Marts only to rest a couple of hours or to wait for our destination campground to open. We always go in and talk to the mgr. on duty to get the OK. I've also called ahead to be sure they allow RV's on their lot. They have always made us welcome. When we do that we also do our shopping while we are waiting. Check out www.allstays.com/c/wal-mart-locations.htm for locations and phone numbers and maps to wal-mart.

We have stayed at several Wal-Marts both in our previous 5th and now the MH. We have never had any problems, usually we go in and do some shopping first than talk to the management to be sure it would be ok.. They usually tell us the location in the lot to park and we have a great night's rest. We are out early in the morning and never dump our tanks or put out our slides or jacks.

While we understand the occasional need for some campers to find a place for a few hours sleep because of poor planning and not stopping when they should. We do not condone staying anywhere except a campground!!
We have been on the road for 35 years and put on between 12,000 and 15,000 miles a year and have NEVER found the need to stay at anywhere but a campground at night. We generally drive from 8 or 830 AM to 4 PM so we always plan our trip around those hours.
Campgrounds must be inspected and meet all kinds of regulations to open and stay open as places designed to accomodate people as guests. Wal Mart, Sams, Best Buy, Albertsons and so on-each in their own industry must also meet certaiin regulations. Do not think they wouldn't complain vigoursly if the local campgrounds started selling products in competition without the required permits.
Campers should not be staying in unlicensed places!!
I know this position is controversial but it is what we believe!
Enjoy no matter where you choose to stay-camping is wonderful!!!

We have been full-timing for five years now and have stayed at many a Wal-Mart all over the US. We even had a reporter speak to us a Wal-Mart in California about dry camping and put an article about it in her local paper.
We always ask and alway buy something. It actually usually ends up costing us much more than if we had stayed at a campground.
If this is done with respect and consideration it is fine. Usually we are in late and out early and never set up camp. We do put out our small bedroom slide so we can sleep, but we always find a curb with grass to overhang so we are not taking up too much space.
We have never been asked to leave or told we could not stay.
If we don't abuse it, we will be able to continue to do this.

We stayed overnight at a Walmart in Elizabethtown, KY a couple of weeks ago, but I did call ahead to make sure it was okay. It was great though! We just pulled in, had a drink and went to bed. There was some noise but not anything that would keep you up all night.
I would do it again no problem. The next morning I was able to get up, go get coffee inside and get some stuff that I had forgotten at home when we left.
I know there is one on Rt. 30 in Plymouth, IN too and I see RV's and Trucks staying in that one all the time. I live in the Chicago area, but we own a camping lot in Plymouth at a Jellystone Park.
We love Walmart!!

Noticed the other evening at the local WM Supercenter, a small class C and a B+ parked next to each other. This was about 7:30pm and they had their awnings out, grills going, lawn chairs, and a LARGE mat laid out in between them so they didn't touch the asphalt while sitting there.
Mentioned this to my wife as we went by and she said they were "camping", not staying there.
We thought about taking the FMCA print out to them about parking lot etiquette but we were afraid we'd start something we didn't want to...............

we stay occasionally in walmart parking lots and also flying j parking lots. when we are on the road going from point a to point b we do not want to pay 20 or 25 dollars just for a place to park. be respectful, do not put out the awing, lawn chairs etc. and park out of the way. asking the manage where they want you to park works well as they often prefer we park in certain areas. came back from the dallas area to michigan this spring and stayed to some walmarts plus a construction yard where there was lots of room. always asked and was never refused.

I am so flabergated at your posting that I almost don't know how to reply. It is regretable that you have such a strong opinion on how the rest of us deal w/parking overnight. If restricting your overnight stays to expensive, often poorly managed campgrounds is how you choose to do your RV'ing more power to you. But PLEASE keep your opinions as to how the rest of us should act to yourself.
Personally, I find that staying at the casinos, and Flying J truck stops to be very convenient, and we always seem to be welcome.

We were in San Angelo, TX 4/4/08. I went in to purchase the Rand-McNally road atlas, cost is $5.97. I ask an employee if they allowed overnight parking. He told me you can park anywhere at the end of the lot. Just not to park close and block traffic as they are open 24 hours. Very clean with 5 restaurants within walking distance. Semis were parked on the west side of lot. The atlas shows where all the superstores/24hour walmart and Sam's club stores are located. Why do people have to ruin things for those of us who respect the hospitality ? You know what I mean, grills, lawn chairs,re-packing. A free nights sleep for a full-timer is priceless. I appreciate Wal-Marts policy. Lois

I just finished 4 weeks on the road and stayed at Flying J's, Walmarts, Home Depot and Cracker Barrels and we were welcome at every one of them. The manager at Cracker Barrel was great and he even let me fill the fresh water tank. I'm not traveling 10, 20 or 30 miles off the trail to find a campground. Last year, there was a story from out west where an RV'r with a huge fancy Class A unit got caught dumping his tanks behind a Cracker Barrel. When DEC and EPA people got done with him, he paid dearly, more than his rig was worth.

We've used them at different times [usually when traveling from point A to point B] in the 12 years we've been fulltiming. There have been only a few times, we have been told we could not stay but here is something you might find interesting. In Childress, TX a few weeks ago there was a sign just as we pulled in which said: Truck & RV Parking here. We knew there would be no trouble staying there for sure.
Tonight we are in the WM lot in Deming, NM and as we pulled in a security guard in his truck stopped us. I thought "Oh man, we're going to have to move on". Instead he told us to follow him and and said "I'll escort you to where we are putting the RV's" Guess you know, we felt welcomed there!!!:D

I just crossed the United States from NC to Oregon. I-40 to the Grand Canyon national park. Then north thru Utah to Idaho then West to Portland.
Stayed at 4 Walmarts, two campgrounds, one National park and one Casino.
The Walmarts were when I just needed some sleep before moving on. The campgrounds were where laundry was needed and site seeing was to be had. 3 nights at one and 1 night at another.
Grand Canyon National park three nights. One night at Wild horse Casino.
I called ahead to the Walmarts every time and was given permission every time. Bluetooth enabled GPS makes calling ahead a breeze.
I really appreciate my Walmart stays.

We pulled our travel trailer to the bottom part of the lot of a Walmart off Rt 25 in Pueblo, Co. My husband went into the store for groceries. I had been in the camper for a few minutes when the dog had to go out. A pick-up truck pulled right next to our trailer and 2 people hopped out and headed for the camper door. Thankfully the dog started barking and I yelled at them. The one guy ran up the bank by the lot and the other just walked away. I almost felt like letting the dog loose I was so mad, so be careful!! I am sure they have done this before and were just waiting for unsuspecting campers.

Ive stayed at Walmart may nights when traveling accross the USA. There are some that do not let you stay but that was always (when I asked) because of a local ordinance. Walmarts are always well lighted with camaras and many have security. I stayed at the flying J a few times and they are noisey and crowded and the Walmarts restrooms are always cleaner! And don't anyone think Walmart is doing us a favor every one of us spends more money at Walmart per stay than you would EVER pay a campground. We pull in go into Walmart for supplies (they have everything) then grab a barbeque chicken for 5 bucks and go back to the RV.

I had a horrible experience with the Walmart located in Eastport Plaza in Portland, OR. I was in my motorhome, preparing for a trip, and I parked in the Walmart lot so I could do my shopping. It was 10:00 AM, and I no sooner got the keys out of my RV (I did not take up an entire parking area, I was not towing), I was met by security, asking me what my business was, like I was some type of criminal. I was stunned. I told security I was going shopping, and then asked why I was being questioned regarding the nature of my business, when no one else was. The bottom line was I was being discriminated against because I was driving an RV. I went into the store and made a complaint with the store manager, and said if they had a policy and did not want RV's parked in the lot for any reason, a sign should be posted. The store manager was rude, I called the District Office in WA, but no one returned my telephone call. As I said I was not spending the night, I was there to shop -- which I no longer do at any Walmart, anywhere!!!

I lived in Oregon not to long ago and know of no reason why the store would do this. It may be a result of people who have taken advantage of Wal-Mart by making extended stays and/or leaving a mess. I have never been grilled as you were, but have seen rather large signs that told me not to even think about camping in their parking lot.

We live in Oregon and often go through Bend. We and usually about 5 more RVs are overnighting at the Bend Wal-Mart. The key IMHO is courtesy and consideration.
We arrive late after 6 PM when the shopping is decreasing and there are more parking places. We always park as far from the entrance as possible and near a survailance camera. Of course we NEVER leave trash except in thier trash cans.
Side note: When we were full-timing, we would love to eat at the many Crackler Barrel's. (I sure miss those out here in the west.) We would arrive late evening, park way in the back and after dinner we asked for the Manager. We told him/her we enjoyed the dinner and would like to spend the night in our rig and have breakfast with them in the morning. We were NEVER refused - again courtesy and consideration.
There were several times we did the same thing in other businesses. We have not full-timed now for about ten years and wonder if things have changed out on the highways. It seemed that small towns were always friendlier than urban areas, and probably safer.
Considering the campgrounds are charging $35 to $55 per night, it is worth trying to spend a few nights in a Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Costco, Cracker Barrel or ??? if you are self-contained. We also had a current state map with roadside rests marked. Even those that say "No overnight" or " "8 hour limit" if it was less than half empty we were never asked to move. Again, arrive late and leave early and save $50.00! That will buy 10 gallons of gas!
As for safety....an important point. In general, rural is better than urban, well lit areas, security cameras, security guards, permission of the management always helps. We had a dog that let us know if we had visitors and I had a big sticker on the door that said, "Protected by Smith and Wesson."

Staying at Walmarts are fine as long as you get permission from the onsite manager.. we've never had a problem... Do not set up camp - do not put out your slides - just stay long enough to sleep.. Shop if you need to and that is usually payback enough.. I like to go outside and pick up some of the trash others have left & put the baskarts into their corrals, where they belong.. If you are refused the say - be polite and move on down the highway.. We have found it always safe........

My wife and I stay at Walmart quite often. We always ask permission from management. We stay there because it's cheaoer than a capground, yeah; really. A campground is 20-40 dollars. Wespend 50-60 at Walmart. We have never had a bad experience at a Walmart. Have also stayed at Flying J The only problem we have foud at Flyng J is that it is sometimes a little noisey.

We have stayed in Walmart parking lots from NC to California, always checking with management, with same result. We were always welcome except rare occasions where local ordinances prevented it. It is a great way to pull in and out quick, near interstate highways, and we always use them when in-route to a destination campground. Great money saver, quick way to grocery/supply shop.

We love Walmarts!! We always ask a manager before we start getting ready for the night. We have only ran in to one in Oregon that said no. We did get educated in Mena Ark. We found out what the teens do for entertainment on Fri. night! They pull up so their headlights shine in your bedroom window and roll their window down and turn up their radio as loud as it will go! My husband slept through the whole thing! I have to laugh about it now and just chalk it up to another r. V. experience. I should write a book one day about our vacation from hell, that happened to be Fla.It would make the r.v. movie seem mild. (Ha)

We don't stay overnight at Wal-Mart, truck stops, or rest areas (with a very limited exception). Not because we find anything wrong with it, but because:
1) We're off the road by 2 or 3 in the afternoon...who wants to spend the afternoon and early evening sitting in a parking lot?
and
2) We have 3 slides and the fifth wheel is unuseable, with the exception of the bathroom with the slides in. However, even if we had an RV with no slides, we wouldn't "blacktop boondock" because of reason #1.

We stayed at one just north of Birmingham Alabama. We pulled over to the edge of the lot back where they get their freight, out of everyone's way. It was storming and very windy. Over where we were the "berm" along the edge of the lot was about 15' high which sheltered us from the high winds.
We stocked up there including purchasing our evening meal from their deli.
There were at least 3 other rigs on the lot and we were all pulling out about daybreak the next morning. Thanks Wal-Mart!

Where are you getting your information from? I have never heard that. We stop there all of the time and have never had a problem or been refused to stay there. I don't think anyone would dump tanks in the storm drains. If it happened it is probably a rare thing.

If there is a bar across the entrance of the Walmart parking lot and your motor home will not clear under it, then that is a pretty obvisious sign that you are not welcome into the parking lot. Some cities like Grand praire, Tx. and Mesquite, Tx. will not allow parking in comerical parking areas witrh an 18 wheeler or with a motor home to exceed 3 hrs. In Grand Praire, Tx. this is a city ordinance.

Not a fan of what WalMart has done to the competition and their doing away with their original "made in America" policy. That said we cannot beat their prices, and the fact they allow us an occassional overnight in their lots warrants shopping there, whether motorhoming or at home. We live in a small town in western NC and a super WM is two miles away that does an unbelievable amount of business. 90% of the RVs are only there one night but have the idiots that get thrown out after a week or longer, with slides out, for sale signs, etc. Please don't ever do that and ruin it for the rest of us. The a previous comment, call ahead and get permission, always.

We just returned from western pan handle of Florida and traveling north east on I -85 be where running late 9 pm so we pulled into two different rest areas and they where dark and deserted so we moved on. The wife pulled up a Walmart on the mapping program just of the highway at Thomasville North Carolina so we pulled in and parked and I checked with the managment and they make me feel right at home and where glad to have us overnite in there lot. They directed me where to park and told me they have security cameras and drive thru security also so not to worry. We sleep like babies and where out at 7am : after a fast face wash and tooth brush. Good experience!!!!! This was our first time overniting at Walmart but sure not the last.:)
