We are driving a 1990 34' Komfort that we have had since 1989. Just returned from three weeks in Az., 2,300 miles, good mileage, good performance, with never a problem with the rig. However, momma says she needs more space, time for a new rig. My problem is I can't find a good source of quality ratings for class A motorhomes. Can we start our own rating system within this forum? I have read various opinions of motorhome quality in other forums, but most of them seem to be just that, opinions, and they seem to be influenced by irrelevant experience, such as how much you liked your sales person.
Also, at our RV club meeting, someone mentioned they were asked how old their RV is. They were told that rigs over ten years old would have to inspected before the park would make a reservation for them. Anyone else had this experience?

When it comes to ratings, there is already a rating system, go here

Now as far the ten year rule, I have only heard people say they have heard of it, but have yet to find any one that has actually ran into it.
I would guess that some of the high end Class A RV Resorts might have such a rule. Personally these are not the places where I prefer to camp.

whodo is right about the "10 year rule". We have a 1992 coach and have never had any problems, but then we stay away from those high end parks too.
Good luck finding a newer MH with the quality of older ones. We went from a 1998 35 foot gas MH to this 1992 diesel mainley becaise we could not find much quality the newer models.

There is an outfit in Sequim Washington that produces a motorhome safety rating CD. I am sorry to say that I cant remember the name of the software, I borrowed a copy from a friend prior to buying the coach I have now. Perhaps a google search on rv software in Sequim may work.
It was quite enlightening and will be worth the search.

last year we stayed at a rv park in reno, navada and they had to inspect our rig. it is a 1982 itasca with battle scars but mainly they just wanted no leaks of oils or fluids. all hookups for water , septic and electric to be in good working condition, and no broken windows. so our old beast was ok, and it passed so i pulled it in next to all those new ones, stayed a week and they were very nice (kind of pricey though) and had a enjoyable stay

We have heard of the ten year rule but never ran into it in any campgrounds. I think that some of thegh end resorts would like to have rugs that are all new or only several years old.
All of the CG's do ask for year of rig so they do have the chance to say we need to inspect your unit-trailer, 5th wheel or motorhome. I really think it is an appearance thing more than anything else.
We do know of parks that require seasonals ot have trailers that are less than ten years old.

I made reservations at a park and they asked me all of those questions...so I thought wow this must be a good park. When we got there it was a dump!
I can understand not wanting a trashy Class A in your park but if it is kept up and looks like new than what is the purpose of this ten year rule...probably just to check you out and see if they want you there and if they don't it is a great way to get rid of you.

I had that experience with The park on Rayford Rd and 1-45 in The Woodlands Tx. Took a photo in of my 1992 Newmar. I was Refused. I drove the park after that and I really did not like the park after all. There were rigs there that were not very nice. The people at the desk were nice.
But the woman who made the decision was busy on the phone and made a snap decision. Little did she know we are a professional middle age couple and very particular. It was there loss. I recently spoke to a very nice lady by the name of Nancy at the Resort park in Mesa Az. They look at a photo but she said they have never had a problem with older rigs. The city of Tempe has a city ordinance against any rig over 10 yrs. old. Also I have not found a park in the Houston Tx area where you can have a screen room or a shed.

there seems to be some general misunderstanding of this rule. Every RV park I have checked has this "10 year old" rule, but there is the caveat, "Or, in pride of ownership condition"
This is the RV park owners way of trying to keep the park in good shape, and to keep Rvrs returning.
Have you ever stayed in an RV park next to a rusting, leakinf broken down rig? Have the inhabitants of that rig been somewhat unruly and sloppy in their camping? I have, and I didn't like it!
If you take care of your rig and keep it in good working order and somewhat clean and neat, you will not be turned away from even the 'high-end' RV parks!
We have a 1998 Dolphin and stayed at Palm Creek Golf & RV Resort in Casa Grande, AZ. A VERY nice RV park, and were welcomed most warmly. We camped in between a brand new Prevost and a 2005 Monaco. We all had a great time!
Hope this clears up the "10-year old" rule.
Happy Trails! :)
