ThanksI have never done it, but if it were me, I would make my way over to the Scenectady, NY area & pick up I88w over to Binghamton and take I81s all the way down to Va ,I66/17 to Fredricksburg, then I 95 to NC, it may be longer but it puts you away from all that madness (NY,Newark,Trenton,Philly, Baltimore,DC).
I know when I go to Upstate NY, it always tells me to go thru DC/Balt, and it is actually shorter, but I'll go the long way, thank you.

I agree with the statement above, it's longer but will save you a lot of headache. I 95 from NYC to DC is the most traveled road in the US, it's nothing but a pain.
Good luck and have a safe trip.

tAKE THE ADVICE OF THE i-81 TO i-77 route. Takes you down thru the Shenandoah Valley, a beautiful trip and lots less traffic.

Just a quick up date for those that might be thinking of taking this trip. We drove up Rte 95 to Fredrickburg, VA and picked up I think Rte 22 to Rte 66 which then put us on Rte 81 north. We choose to go on Rte 78 to Rte 287 and cross the Tappenze bridge. Very mininmal traffic and I think we found a good route finally to head south to NC each year.
I found some locals from VA that were a huge help.
