My husband and I are hoping to take to the road very soon. I called today to switch to Direct Tv and internet service. Total charge is supposed to be $131.00 a month. My husband thinks we can do betterOn the price. We were just in the Outer Banks and had cable for only $2.00 a night. The internet connection was free. Does any one know if this is comman or were we just lucky. We dont plan on watching TV everynight or going on line, but occasionally would be nice. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JimNI

I do not think the internet service through Direct TV can be used while you travel it is for a fixed location.
Who did you call about this & what equipment did they say you would be getting.
Mike

As Mike has already stated, internet through Directv only works while hooked to a phone line. Satellite down - phone line up for internet use.

Now you can have Satellite internet through companies such as "Hughes Sat." and receive Directv from the same satellite dish with what is called a bird on a wire (BOW). Hughes dish on a tri-pod with a BOW would cost you around $100 a month depending on services purchased.

When you were on the Outer Banks of NC getting cable for $2 a night and internet free, that would of been a service offered by the place you were staying. SOME campgrounds will have cable tv and wifi for a price, but not all.

It is my understanding that the "Bird on a Wire" (BOW) is no longer available according to Hughes Satellite.

I think I just read that the cheapest new equipment for internet via satallite is almost $3,000 and that is not roof mounted, but on a tripod.

I'm on the net a lot but when I go fulltime as soon as oure house sells I use only campground or wirecard on my cell phone. No way am I spending that type of money for internet.

Directv is better than cable as it can be used when boondocing as long as you can get a clear shot of the southern sky. Once they approve your waiver you can get east and west coast nertwork feeds.

It cost me about $80 a month at home with two receivers (one HD) and their premium package. Not much more than you jsut paid for cable ($60 a month) @ $2.00 a night.

At the present time Hughes Sat. on a Tri-Pod is $1495 complete with tech instructions on set up. If you want roof mount then the cost will get into the $3000-$5000 range.
If you already understand the set up/aiming/cross pol procedures etc. you can buy a used tri-pod system for about $650 up.
Hughes never has supported the BOW (bird on wire) for sat. tv. they will tell you it is not available. If you want a BOW you have to get one from a installer that has access to purchase them from an outside Hughes vendor.

Unless you are dry camping I wouldn't worry to much about the internet. I haven't stayed in an RV Park in a long time that didn't have WI-FI. I pay $125.00 a month for Direct TV, this includes 4 receivers, three at home and one in the MH, with one being HD, with their Premium Package.
