Richard and I want to do a camping trip to the Keys in July or August (hurricane season, I realize). Anyway, anyone out there who has experience with camping/campgrounds? Would appreciate any information. Is it too late to hope to get a spot? Judith

We went a few years ago over the 4th of July Holiday and stayed at the KOA on sugarloaf key.. BE WARNED... Check when the Mini Lobster season is, prices go out of this world then, if you are flexable plan around this....

There is Bluewater Key Resort. What a great place! But you pay for it. Sits or on the water, each with a private tiki bar, just a great place. Here's the link:

If you try immediately, you may get lucky and get a spot in one of the state parks - Longboat Key and Bahai Honda are both quite nice and reasonable. You should check often because cancellations may get you in too. We lucked up last year just by chance. The previous year we stayed at Sunshine Key Camground - ok but very expensive. If you are a Thousand Trails member, they have a special through Encore Parks, of which Sunshine Key Resort is one, if you will be doing other camping in FL - check the website.

Hi sunny, i tried to get to the site administrator to get us together to private message, but i don't think it worked. i'm not computer literate AT ALL. Anyways i live on the florida keys and have lots of info, also on the out of the way places. As mentioned above, the state parks are great but fill up fast. The newest one, Curry Hammock State Park is closed during hurricane season, the other 3 are open. Go to reserveamerica.com for more info.

Koa and Sunshine Key are very crowded and $$$. Everything in the keys is small, so plan on getting out on the water, even if it's just snorkling off shore.

If you are a member of Passport America they just signed up Jolly Roger Travel Park in Marathon. not bad for $30-35.

Hope this helps you and anyone else who may be interested.

We just spent 2 weeks in the keys in May (son got married). We stayed John Pennekamp SP in Key Largo, which was nice, water and electric only but they have a RV dump. Then in Marathon we stayed at Curry Hammock SP. Beautiful, camp right on the water. There again only water and electric, but RV dump there also. Sites are large. We are 40' MH with 4 slides and had no problem. Good Luck

We stayed at this campground and it was fantastic. Just like you said, quiet, scenic and safe. The managers were great and the campers were very friendly. We will definately go back there again. The restaurant and bar had a fire and were not open, but they are building back very quickly. We could see major progress in the 10 days were stayed there. Can't wait to go back when they are open again. How often do you get down there?
