Dave
I don't know if you ever frequent either of these forums
http://www.hamforum.com/index.php?sid=fa6e668ba52ac906d8d97cdb1e768c51
or http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin/ikonboard.cgi?main=1
Both of these Ham forums have a lot of members that are running PSK 31, AMTOR, PACTOR etc. You would get a wealth of information and a lot confussion by asking on those forums.

Hi Dave....what type of HF rig are you using...I have an Icom 706 and purchased a Saratoga PSK unit...really easy to hook up and use. It also can be used on SSTV, FSK/RTTY, haven't tried it on anything else yet...its mostly plug and play..I use it with a laptop..ACER Aspire3002LCi and have no problems with it....there are other ones you can get...like the rig blaster, PK232, and many others that are very expensive...as far as Amtor and Pactor...big bucks....73 de K3MP Mark

Guess this thread is so old, no one will read it, but I will try anyway.

I have been on PSK31 at home and in the motorhome almost from the beginning of the rebirth of PSK and Pactor prior to that. Like PSK better than any other means of amateur radio. I can work the world with 25 watts and a screwdriver antenna.

There is lots of free software out there and unless you have a pretty new computer, without a serial port, the interface is really simple to make.

Give it a try and you will love it.
