Hello from the Walled Lake area. We usually camp at what we call our home base; Proud Lake Recreation Area. We normally go every other weekend when possible at Proud Lake but we do camp at other places also. Its just Proud Lake is close to home (6 miles) for a quick get-a-way. Our favorite campgrounds are in the U.P. though and we try to get up there at least twice a year.

Nice to hear from all you michigan folks. I think it's amazing that all of the people that posted here almost all go to different campgrounds. That says a lot about the camping opprotunities in our state. We camped mostly in the state park campgrounds in the past but this year we are going seasonal at Lost Vally CG near Lupton. We used to frequent South Higgens SP, Rifle River SP. Those were my favorite parks to camp. Weve also been to Ionia, sleeper in Caseville,Aloha SP,and Numerous others we visited once. I've always enjoyed camping in Mi. and never felt the need to go anywhere else. There are just so many places to go here I don't believe I'll ever get to all the ones I want to in my lifetime. Although I'm going to try. This year I believe we will use the seasonal site as a homebase so I can trek further north and into the UP to check out some of the sites there. We still have a large cabin tent I will use for lodging on the road.

I also belong to Outdoor Adventures. Used to be only SP campers, then came the reservations system from an out of state company. Nothing but headaches. Never doubted a minute on joining Outdoor Adv. Simple call up to 3 months prior to your arrival at any of the 5 parks and your in. No hassle and beautiful parks!
Highly recommend checking them out.

Have you ever been to Ostego Lake State Park? We are going for 1st time this fall. My brother's family has been there many times and say it is nice. Not too far of drive for you. http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/ParksandTrailsInfo.aspx?id=482

I'm not sure where Atlanta is but if you can get over to the Hancock area go to Mclain State Park. Great park for camping right on Lake Superior. Fantastic sunsets, clean restrooms and they do have big rig friendly sites. We have camped there several times, usually in our pop up but we have taken our Airstream Skydeck there with no problems. They only have electric hookups though.

Lived just inside the "city limits" of Marquette... Marquette/city limits that must be one of those oxymorons come to think of it.
Still roam the state quite abit from June-Nov. U.P. perferred... but I'm not to high and mighty to go a bit south and tangle w/ a TROLL either! ;)
Aside from that I figured out years ago... "when the weather goes south, so do I."

Hello all you Wolverines, I'm from Michigan but have relocated to California. I lived in Macosta County, town of Stanwood where I still own property. My wife and I are retired, and are what they call anytimers. We have a 26'fifthwheel pulled with a Ford F-250 super duty diesel. We made a 4 month(11,277 mile) trip around the United States last summer, took in all of Michigan From Ohio thru the L.P. up to the U.P. over to Wisconsin, from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron in the L.P.--.
This year we will be camphost at the oldest state park in the state of California( Big Basin Redwoods S.P.) If anyone is traveling in Ca. along the coast we will be real glad to lay eyeballs on you. We are just northeast of Santa Cruz near Boulder Creek.

HI everyone,
I'm originally from Northern Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie. I now live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We are mostly weekend campers, but do a longer trip at least once a year. This year a two week trip to Utah.
We mostly camp at Brower Park in Mecosta County ( should sound familiar to "firstchiefmike"). We can camp and water ski there and it's only one hour from G.R.
Happy camping,

Hello Chuck, Yes I do seem to remember a campground on the west side of 131 Just south of Big Rapids , I have never been there as it is only about 5 miles from my property. That is where I always stay as I have a home with RV parking. My younger brother lives in the house but of course I have all hookups. If you have an e-mail we can continue to correspond.Mine is Firstchiefmike@ AOL.Com

I grew up in Clarkston then Ortonville Michigan (camped an entire summer at Groveland Oaks while my parents built a house in Clarkston).
After I left 7 years serving for the United States Air Force I lived in Rochester with my mom for a bit until I got some traction in life then I moved to Novi, Michigan then bought a house in Westland, Michigan and then I finally bought a new home in Grand Blanc, Michigan where I live today but still work at EDS in Detroit. So I commute from Flint to Detroit on a regular basis.

Former Michigander here living in the Desert in Las Vegas. Moved here from Jackson, Grew up near Midland, spent many youthfull summers near Lupton at the Rifle River recreational area, thats what it was called before it became a state park. Lack of work moved me out out of Michigan years ago. Miss the easy summers "up north." Don't miss the mad dash southward on 75 or 27 on Sunday afternoon. Had a Bald Eagle grab a fish 15 feet from my canoe in Devoe Lake at Lupton. Can still see it in my memory. Have lived in many diffrent states, and everywhere I go, I enjoy meeting other Michgnders.

The rifle river state game area is still as pristine as it was. The state has done a good job keeping it that way. There is a modern cg now with new shower facilities. We just did a drive through last week and enjoy the views there the trout were darting in and out of the rocks in the river like no other. We have a seasonal site at the lost Vally cg just south of the state game area and I fish every am on east twin lake and the eagles are still there and thriving. Just the other morning I was watching 3 eaglets on a dead tree watching the lake for easy pickings. Also the loons are there every day with their distinctive cries. I wasn't long ago we were camped at the state park and were fishing on Devoe lake and the loons were going nuts screeching like mad and we looked and the Eagles were picking off their young one at a time. They took all three of the baby loons. If you return to Mi I would suggest you check out the area it is still a beautiful place to visit.

My children grew up in SW Michigan. I'm a fulltimer now, but my daughter and I used to run away to Frankenmuth at least once a year by ourselves. Last trip with our fiver together was up to the Soo where she graduated.
Now I Workamp and travel the country. Will be leaving Pennsylvania next week after this assignment ends and head to Michigan to see my Mom in Ddearborn (good Fairground full hook-up campground just a few miles away), then over to Kalamazoo area to see my children and grandchildren before heading south for the winter. We use Passport America - Timber Trails CG in Decatur gives us the half-price rate every day after Labor Day weekend - really helps with the budget and the grandchildren love the facilities.

I live in Ohio, and my daughter was born in Michigan...Currently live between Dayton and Cincinnati...We are enjoying visiting many of the Ohio State Parks for short weekend trips...and a few in Indiana. Going to Memphis for 1 week at Thanksgiving, then will winterize the rv until probably spring break time...Then will head to Florida/Alabama region (my place of birth) and parents still live there...Hoping to take my 70 year old parents out to Yellowstone and Mt Rushmore area's this coming summer.

Michiganders...
We were in Indiana (South Bend) for the Navy v Notre Dame game recently. Took the RV up and almost stayed at a nice campground in Michigan there near Notre Dame (6 miles away in Niles) but just decided to stay in the area for a few hours post game and let traffic clear then headed part way home to Dayton area and slept in a rest area. Nice areas near where the 3 states meet.

Uffdaw from da U.P.!
I grew up around Iron River area (mid central U.P.) admist many Ottawa National Forest campgrounds, such as Imp, Blockhouse, Paint River Forks, Lake Ste Kathryn, TeePee Lake etc. Then there is the famous Pentoga Park county run campground (packs em in like sardines ---ick) and the not too famous county park Little Smokey Lake.
Those are the favorites and that is where you will find us most weekends in the spring/summer/fall.
In the winters, we are known to take our rig up to the relatives and park between the snowbanks and use our rig as our own private hotel room. So much nicer than booking a strange room.

We live in Grand Ledge Mi and are heading for AZ in January. It'll be fun to wear shorts in January and Feb..
We have a new Arolite 30 foot travel trailer and have used it mainly in the Lupton area while visiting my wifes folks this past summer. It'll be nice to get away and enjoy ourselves in the sunshine.
We too are hoping for favorable weather as we head Southwest.

It's been a while since I posted last, in fact it's been 4,720 miles ago. We are having a ball in this warmer weather. Sure beats what my fellow Michiganders are going through.
We've been in Tucson, Phoenix, Lake Havasu City AZ, Twentynine Palms CA and back in Lake Pleasant AZ till the end of this week. We then head for Brownsville Texas and stopping different places between here and there.
Maybe around middle or later in March we'll wonder (in no hurry) to see my Brother and his Family in S.Carolina for a week or so and then if Spring has really sprung, we'll head back home. Probably by the time I get in my driveway, the lawn will need cutting and the pool will be waiting to open. Sounds like work!! Maybe I'll drive slower.
Actually it's been fun and we are still having a good time.
I do wish I'd gotten a bigger trailer or even a big 5th wheel. This 30 footer is getting smaller and smaller. oh well, we'll see what next year brings.

Hey All: I'm new to this site, and just reading all the Michigander information. I've been camping about 15 yrs. and most of it's been in Michigan. Higgins Lake is a for sure spot each year, and have a reservation for Lake Huron Campground over Memorial Weekend, I haven't camped there but am going to try Young State Park the end of July, and Sleeper State Park. I have never camped in the UP yet.........I'm all for it, but my kids are still to young to appreciate great scenery. I have camped at Silver Creek, and also took the SS Badger (camper and all) across lake Michigan to Wisconsin, to camp near the Dells. Hope to meet some of you sometime here. ;)

Hey Frank.. we are up about 70 miles along the Wisconsin shore from where you landed on the SS Badger at Manitowoc. There are a lot of lovely campgrounds along the shore to loop around and over Mac Bridge to get back home too.
We checked rates (website is still posted at last years rates) to take the Badger over to your neck of the woods with our motorhome. And it's almost equal in fuel costs to the high price of diesel to drive around! So we might just do that trip and load up on the Badger for the overnight cruise, and check out the campgrounds in lower penninsula of Michigan.
