Hi, I am new to RVing, two weeks and one trip, and have encountered some problems that I need to have evaluated. I have a 1998 Discovery DP, 275hp, 36T and when you apply the brakes after they have been sitting it sounds like drums rubbing on drums and squeeling like crazy. After it warms up it stops but is jerky, also the air ride is like riding in a car with no shocks.

I need to take it to someone but living in a small town, I am not privy to all the options that are available to big city living.

Cummings takes care of the motor, Allison the transmission, RV repair people the other stuff, and Freightliner for suspension and brakes. Is this correct?

I really need to have this investigated and soon.

Thanks,

Bob E.

My brakes are sometimes noisy for the first few stops after sitting, especially if sitting in a very damp/wet/humid location. It sounds like the suspension may be bouncing too much, but hard to say without being there. If the shocks have never been replaced on a '98 model, there is a good chance they are worn out.

You could go to a Freightliner place for chassis svc, but don't count out any large truck service location when needing chassis or engine service. Most (probably all!) of them would be familiar with Freightliner chassis. Many times, they are authorized service locations for the engine, tranny & chassis!

Thank you for your reply. It really feels like shocks are gone but I had no way of telling.

By the way, just for everyone's general information,I took my MH to Rip Griffin Truck Stop here in Big Spring, Tx as they advertise that they do Freightliner work, but when I went inside to talk with the manager, he told me that they are NOT AUTHORIZED to work on any MH.

Not sure why, but that was what he told me. At that time all I was going to do was have the filters and oil changed and they would not touch it.
Had to take it 50miles over to Odessa Cummings to have that done. So now it is back to square one.

We do have a RV dealer here and I am going to call tomorrow and see where he recommends I take it.

Thanks again for the reply.:)

i just went through what you are dealing with. i have 90' ford winnie. brakes will make noise when it's been sitting but when they get warm noise should go away. the jerky brakes sound like bad rotors or sticky wheel clyinder. as for the ride u need to take it in and see if your shocks are bad. i dont know about what you call "air ride" if you have air bags ck air pressure. if you are having a hard ride need to have rear springs cked

Thanks for the info.

Took it to Freightliner in Odessa, Tx and they said the brakes and shocks are OK but there is a leaking seal that they want to check out. Am supposed to go and get it this evening. They are open 24/7, so they are busy.

If the ride is still hard, someone said to check the valve on the airtanks..
Will have to wait until it gets back to check that one out.

I might have bit off more than I can chew on this DP. Ha! Seems like I know less and less about it. Ha!

Well retired last Friday, so now have time to read and check this thing over really well.

Thanks again for the replys.

Be good to yourself and God Bless .
