I tried a couple of ordinary "one size fits none" tire air compressors from an auto parts stores. They seem good for about a pound or 2 every half hour.
I've been looking at a portable Viair or ARB unit that can do a lot better, but are fairly expensive.
Has anybody any experience or suggestions?

I just purchased a Rigid brand from Home depot for $250.
It does a good job so far.I could not justify the expensive 12v.I run 110#'s in the trailer tires and the same in the steer tires on the truck. It does a good job.
It is 110v so I have to run both of my Honda EU2000's if I'm not hooked up to 110.
Here is the thread that got me going on it..

I use a small 115 V Huskey from Lowes ($99 a couple of years ago). Inflates my 80 psi tires fairly quick. It has a small 1.75 gal air tank.

you can but a small pancake compressor from home improvement store or harbor freight. Will work better than the cheap 12 volt compressors. Also doesn't draw too much juice and will run of camper circuit without blowing fuses. They also work for using small air tools and blowing up inflateable toys.

I bought a Husky 1.5 gallon, 110v unit from Home Depot about 6-8 months ago for $99 and it works very well for both 5th wheel and truck.

i got an oil filled compressor with a 4 gal tank for about 90 bucks, had it 2 years and even use it around the house for stuff too, but i never leave home in the rv w/o it. i did find i had to put in inside if it gets cold, the oil gets too thick and it won't start right away! my bays in the rambler aren't heated.
