I am new to RV 's and need some help ! I have a 1978 Fleetcraft travel trailer which I am rebuilding to my dismay ! The trailer has a Monomatic toilet built by Monogram Industries . I don' t know yet if it works as I had to remove it to replace the whole trailer floor. The toilet only has a outlet pipe with a gate valve to hook on to a drain hose -- no holding tank .Where can I get information on how that toilet works and how to use it ? I understand that this toilet is not very good , and it uses formeldahide and stinks badly -- if it does work .Is it possible to install a holding tank conversion on this toilet ? Where can I get information on changing that system to a better system if it is not too costly , and if I have enough room under the trailer for a holding tank, and I guess I would also need another water tank for that toilet ? ?
Also , where I can get parts for this toilet if it does not work properly ?

hi, I have a monomatic toilet and it is far better than a portapotty. which is the only option I have in some of the old trailers. (that I know of) anyway, we just dump in some RV toilet chemical, available at wallmart, and it's ready to go. we do not put in the 4 gal of water, do not use the flush feature, try to only use it for pee, make sure there is a container under the outlet pipe in case of "blue water seepage" from the valve. we use a big blue tub made for that, that also collects the grey water. I empty the potty into this blue tub, when we get home, but you could do it on the road, if you have a place to dump it. when using the toilet, we rinse it with a little water from a dish soap bottle. I take several prefilled on the trip. we camp with no elec. or water. Have you found an alternative to the monomatic? I need something that doesn't require a tank to be installed. and apparently these were used in old airstreams (?) which I have. also, at home I spray a hose inside to clean it. if you aren't keeping yours, maybe you would sell it?
you can email me at lyondresden@hotmail.com, where I will see it sooner. R. Lyon

First I would like to welcome both of you to the forum ("yukon" & "upgal"). Now to offer a little information to both of you.

Monomatic toilet parts are almost non-existent, good luck finding them and when you do find a part be prepared to pay the price.

Yes there is a solution/replacement for them, actually you have a couple of choices. You can convert to a "cassette toilet", or you can if space permits convert to a "marine toilet". There are several different manufactures of these toilets. Here is a link to the Thetford brand line. Check it out, it will give you some ideas to work with.

Now you also have the option of installing a holding tank under the travel trailer between the frame rails. There are companies that make tanks to fit per your request. Back in the late 60's an early 70's we did these conversions on a weekly basis for people. Airstream owners were one of our best customers in those days for doing these conversions.
(Note: For those unfamiliar with Airstream trailers, opening and installing a tank after market is as critical as performing open heart surgery on some one that is awake. Airstream owners would almost have a heart attack when we would start the conversion job.)
Here is a link to a company that makes custom fit tanks. Actually they have reasonable prices for custom fit orders.
