Hi

I'm THINKING of getting an RV to travel full time for a while, and I am trying to estimate the costs. Can anyone give me a general ballpark figure for insurance on an older class C (say mid 80's to mid 90's Tioga or the like)?

Thanks for any help you can give me

In my opinion there are too many variables to even give a ballpark figure. My suggestion would be to talk to your current Auto Insurance Agent, they should be able to help with a ballpark figure based on where you live, type of coverage needed etc.

Here is a list I compiled of companies that specialize in RV insurance. I make no claim that it is complete. If you know of other companies that SPECIALIZE IN RV INSURANCE please tell us about them. A couple of years ago, I got quotes from all of them and they are listed here in the order of best price to worst.

The companies listed below write policies for RVs. They know and understand the coverages required by RV owners. I would not recommend insuring your RV through a company/agent that does not specialize in RV insurance. Do yourself a BIG favor - do your homework and review the websites below. You'll become familiar with the coverages RVers should be carrying. If you still want to go with an automobile insurer, be sure to ask them about the coverages you see discussed on the websites of the companies below - don't fool yourself - there is a BIG difference!

You can learn a lot about RV insurance just by visiting the websites I've provided links to below and looking around. Most have a lot of very good information that we can all benefit from.

Coverages to look for on your policy:
As has been said here before - THE LARGE PRINT GIVETH (and the fine print taketh away!)
Truer words have never been spoken!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Bodily Injury (Liability)
Property Damage (Liability)
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Injury
Collision Deductible
Comprehensive Deductible
Diminishing Deductible (25% per year typical - after 4 years $0)
Travel Interruption Emergency Expenses
Windshield Repair/Replace Deductible
Medical Payments
Personal Effects - Replacement Cost
Total Loss Replacement/Purchase Price Guarantee or Agreed Value Coverage
Liability While Parked (Vacation)
Awning Replacement Coverage
Custom Equipment Coverage
Roadside Assistance Package (RV Towing)

My best advice to everyone is: find out the additional coverages offered by true RV insurers and make sure your policy has them. If you do not have the total loss/purchase price coverages, you may find you own more on your loan than your RV is worth if it's totaled.
