It’s that time of the year again, when motorhomes, travel trailers, and the like are brought out of storage and primed for travel. Ask any Rver and they will tell you that it is a lot of work to maintain their rigs. Things like: changing the oil, flushing the transmission and coolant systems, checking your tires, preparing the galley, stocking the pantry and refrigerator, buying specialty products for the bathroom and so on. We all know that a well maintained rig would help circumvent problems while on the road and away from home. But what do you do to prepare yourself for emergency medical situations?
Don’t worry! I will show you how to prepare a simple but very helpful kit that you can give to paramedics, local town doctors, and emergency room personnel. The kit is called a health inventory. The health inventory provides immediate medical reference data for healthcare providers who treat you and your family members while traveling. I would suggest you type the information provided in the kit so precious time is not wasted trying to read your handwriting. You might think you have beautiful handwriting but believe me, in the midst of an emergency it is far easier to read something that is printed or typed. Prepare a health inventory for each member traveling in your group (don’t forget your pets) and include the following information:
- Demographics: name, age, weight, and height
- Medical history
- Hospitalizations and date: include both outpatient and inpatient procedures
- Medication history: include prescription, over-the-counter drugs, herbal, and homeopathic remedies.
- Prescription refill information.
- Allergies: include food, medication, and environmental allergies.
- Lifestyle: eating habits, alcohol consumption, cigarette usage, physical activity levels, and the like.
- Name of your primary care physician and phone number.
- Name of your insurance carrier, medical identification number, group number, etc.
- List all pertinent telephone numbers (especially toll-free) for durable medical equipment such as portable oxygen tanks.
Prevention is the key! Be prepared and enjoy your traveling!
